Writing without speaking!

So as of recently I’ve came up with a book plot (as I do quite regularly) and decided to make the character who’s point of view it’s from Mute.

And I’ve been finding it really quite interesting. I of course like every new project tried to research as well as I could but there doesn’t seem to be much on the internet that I could find and I also began realising how hard the everyday world is for someone who’s mute.

The natural urge to write the main character replying through words is really hard to stop and having to take a extra few minutes to try and think of a signal or a hand gesture to get his point across also writing someone doing sign language can be quite hard to word.

I’ve also been quite amazed by so of the things that aren’t on the internet. For example the medical ID bracelets (picture above) doesn’t suggest that mute people have one which I found rather strange and decided to give My character one anyway as I could see it being helpful in the long run.

I do make very clear that my character (Lewis) is only mute and is not deaf and is quite smart – he’s just a normal 18 year old boy who just so happens to never be able to say a word.

And I’m finding this project very interesting to write, I’m really enjoying writing it also and hope that I do a mute character right.

As Gay Marriage became legal in the UK today…

I thought I’d treat to a wedding scene I wrote a few months back, which is finally actually legal!

So I present DYAN’s (Ryan and Daniel’s of Superstar and Gay Brigade) Wedding.

“Do you remember we used to talk about this” Callum said as we sat in his car in the McDonald’s car park eating our McDonald’s breakfast
“I remember we used to imagine it and think it was never going to happen”
“I recall marrying you once though”
“In my garden, with daisy rings” I said laughing “You wore a pillow case as a veil”
“Yeah and we used your mums flowers as a bouquet and she wanted to murder us”
“That was less scary than this”
“What are you scared of?” He asked turning and sitting cross-legged looking at me “You love Daniel”
“I know I do” I said leaning against the door “I know I really do, it’s just” I said then leant forward “You know when you think, alright yeah Dan and I have been boyfriends for about eight years and I’ve lived with him for about five of those years but now, it’s like I’m going to stand there and say I will spend all the rest of the years I have with this guy”
“So your just scared of how long that could be” he said as I nodded, I then saw him smile “You’ll be fine Ryan” he said then nudged my chin “I know you’ll be fine, and you know why?”  He asked and I shook my head “Because you are Ryan fucking Mitchell who snogged his boyfriend of five weeks on national television and is still with the damn boy eight years later” he said then hit me slightly “Basically you two have to be together” he said and that made me laugh
“Because if Dyan don’t get married there’s no hope for no one” he said and I leant against the door laughing “So put our rubbish in the bin and let’s get you married” he said and I saluted taking the paper bag.

“Half an hour call” Nathan’s voice said knocking on my door and making me laugh
“We’re not doing a show” I said as he came in
“Oh this’ll be a show in its self” he said and I snorted a little
“Gee thank you” I said standing and hugging him
“Now Ryan” he said holding my shoulders “You still have a chance, get yourself a mank” Nathan said and I heard Callum almost choke behind me
“Oh honey” I said stroking Nathan’s hair behind his ear “Speak Welsh and I’ll marry you” I said as he scrunched his nose in thought
“No” he said shaking his head,
“If you so badly want a scouser there’s a single on behind me” I said holding his shoulder whilst also hearing over dramatic ‘ahs’ from behind me
“Hm intriguing” Nathan said then looked behind me “Reception, you me?” He asked Callum
“I’m game” Callum replied making me turn and look at him quite shocked
“He’s a treat I’ll give you that, just terrible bedside manners” I said then looked between them “Actually both of you had terrible bedside manners” I said as Callum came towards me
“You’ve had both of us?” Nathan asked me as I nodded,
“Yes” I stretched out “Now give me a hug” I said putting my arm out to Callum since I already had Nathan and hugging them both
“You ready?” Callum asked and I hummed a little then felt him kiss my cheek “Come on Mitchell” he said then with Nathan’s aid took my hands and led me to the room we were getting married in.

The instrumental slowly faded out giving me a chance to exchange a wide-eyed look with Daniel as he sat playing with his fingers, then the man doing our ceremony stood and we both got a tiny bit of stage fright.
“Good Morning  ladies and gentleman, welcome to Adam Street for the Civil Partnership Ceremony of Ryan Mitchell and Daniel Bussel. This place in which we are now met has been duly sanctioned according to law for the registration of Civil Partnerships.  If any person present knows of any lawful impediment to this partnership they should declare it now.” He paused and so did Dan and my breathing, but it remained silent  “Today marks the beginning of the rest of Ryan and Daniel’s lives together. By entering into a Civil Partnership today the bond between this couple will grow stronger day by day, month by month and year after year. These two people will build upon the love and commitment they have already shown to one another. Love that has brought us all here for this celebration today.” He said then nodded to us telling us to stand. ” Ryan and Daniel the words that you are both about to say declare your love and commitment to one another” he said joining our hands,
“I promise that I will be there for you Daniel each and every day. In good times and bad I will be by your side. I will be your guardian, your partner and support you on our lifelong journey together.” I said then smiled at Daniel as his eyes glittered
“I promise that I will be there for you Ryan each and every day. In good times and bad I will be by your side. I will be your guardian, your partner and support you on our lifelong journey together” he replied grinning at me and almost making me laugh with how childish his grin was
“Could you all stand” he requested and the congregation stood accompanied with chair squeaks  “Ladies and gentlemen Ryan and Daniel have brought rings with them today. The full circle of the rings symbolises the complete love between two people. Ryan and Daniel will now exchange rings and say the words that will formally declare them both civil partners in law.” He said and I turned to Callum who put the ring in my hand, I squeezed it slightly then looked at Daniel
“I give you this ring as a symbol of my love and commitment to you. I will wear it with pride at all times each and every day. I promise to be open and truthful with you and no distance or obstacle will get in our way. With love from the deepest of my heart I Ryan Mitchell take you Daniel Bussel to be my civil partner in law.” I said whilst sliding the ring onto Daniels ring finger, he looked at it then turned to McKenzie getting mine.
“I give you this ring as a symbol of my love and commitment to you. I will wear it with pride at all times each and every day. I promise to be open and truthful with you and no distance or obstacle will get in our way. With love from the deepest of my heart I Daniel Bussel take you Ryan Mitchell to be my civil partner in law” he said back and put my ring on.
“Ladies and gentlemen the couple are about to sign the schedule that will make them legal civil partners. Ryan and Daniel please read back to me together the following words before you sign your schedule today.” He said then looked at us as we both nodded
“I declare that I know not of any legal reason why we may not register as each others partner. I understand that on signing this document we will be forming a civil partnership with each other.”  Daniel and I repeated back together then both grinned and willingly took the pen from him and both wrote our signatures.
“Ryan and Daniel you have both demonstrated your lifelong commitment to one another today. In the presence of your friends, family and witnesses it gives me great pleasure in declaring that you are now both civil partners to one another. Congratulations” he said smiling at us then nodding to us saying, go on kiss each other. So we did, wrapping our arms around each other and embracing each other whilst kissing, and Daniel even slipped some tongue in. I pulled away and leant my head on his holding his arms that he had around my waist
“I love you” I whispered to him and seeing him smile
“I love you too” he whispered back grinning at me as the music for us to leave began, so I took his hand
“Resist all urge to sing” I whispered to him making him laugh as we began the walk down the centre getting out of the door, watching them close then both began singing the song from where we’d heard it last until we got to the end of the song and looked at each other
“We’re married” Daniel said after looking at his hand and making me laugh
“Yes, yes we are” I said nodding to him then technically caught him as he jumped into a hug with me as the doors opened again this time revealing McKenzie and Callum. Who both hugged us then directed us to we’re we were actually meant to be. Which was in the garden to get some pictures done, once the photographer had deemed our photos perfect he let us back in finding all our guests stood outside the room where the wedding breakfast will take place with various glasses of orange juice and champagne, I lost Daniel almost instantly since he went to his grandparents but it was okay because I got kidnapped by my mother and took to were Ellie, Callum and my grandma were.
“A married man ay” my grandma said shaking her head at me making me laugh a little as Callum gave me a glass of champagne.
“Wasn’t as scary as you thought” Callum said and I laughed throwing back the champagne
“It was terrifying” I said nodding “I’d rather go on stage without knowing the script” I said laughing
“But it was worth it” mum said and I nodded “And I can finally legally call Daniel my son-in-law”  she said happily
“And Ryan he’s now officially your husband” Callum said as I nodded
“That’s a little scary also” I said then looked back at him as he smiled and squeezed my shoulder “Go on” he said pushing me away by my shoulder and mostly towards the group of competition guys.
“First to get married” Jack said as I stood beside him “Fifty quid” he said putting his hand out to Nathan making him laugh
“How’s it feel?” Nathan asked and I shrugged
“No different” I said then laughed “But I suppose he’s always been my husband” I said as I got basically congratulated by all twelve of the guys
“Looks like husband wants you” Cory said putting his hands on my shoulders and making me look for Daniel, finding him still with his grandparents but also looking for someone, I’m presuming me. So I went to him.
“There you are” he said laughing a little “They wanted to give us something” he said then looked at me “Which I can probably tell you what it is” he said so I laughed “But it has to be given to both of us” he explained so I nodded frowning at him, then nodded as his grandad talking Welsh to us both, until he finished and I looked at Daniel
“We wish you many happy years” he translated for me then took the box he was being offered “diolch i chi” Daniel said to them so I nodded, he laughed a little then took a step closer to me, taking the lid of the box and looking at me as I looked at him confused
“It’s a llwy garu” he said and that didn’t help me at all “A love spoon” he said and I began nodding “Usually the man gives one to his wife but you can give them as gifts” he explained to me then folded back the tissue paper
“What do the symbols mean?” I asked as he grinned a little
“The heart, love, horseshoe, good luck, bell, many anniversaries together in harmony, the dragon, protection” he said then looked closer “On the heart it says our names” he said
“Wow” I said looking at him as he nodded
“And the date on the actual spoon” he said then looked at his grandad asking him something then looking back at me “He made it for us” Daniel said and my eyes widened
“That’s, wow” I said making Daniel laugh
“It’s tradition”
“It’s still wow, I mean hats off” I said and got a very confused look off his grandparents as Daniel talked to them again then hugged them both
“Come on” he said taking my hand and leading me to we’re the wedding breakfast was. we checked over the seating plan accepting it then went into the room that’d been completely decorated making us both coo.
“Are you ready… Husband?” I asked holding his hand and feeling him squeeze it
“Yep, husband” he said grinning like a child at me.

Getting too Focused on Page Numbers you forget the Important stuff!

I have recently fell victim of this.

In my novel Gay Brigade: Callum and Noah (which just will not go right at all) I have fell victim to forgetting some really essential scenes and information because I was too focused on the fact that each chapter has to be 15 pages (they are no longer 15 pages each, let’s be honest).

I’m admittedly annoyed at myself and am currently going back through the 155 pages and reading through to make sure I haven’t forgotten the important stuff.

Why is one Chapter 15 pages and the next 27!

I just don’t know!

I’m going to blame myself for pre-writing scenes!

Writing Bon Voyage is making me Nostalgic

In July this book of mine will be the 24th book I’ve published but now as I’m just writing the end of it it’s really making me very, very nostalgic.

I began writing this on the Cruise I went on last year for 2 weeks (19th July – 3rd August). Darren and Luke were just created because I was a little too old for the Kids Club (Sorry Teens Club) and just a bit too young (not 18) for the adult entertainment, so a lot of the time I was caught in the middle with  little to do so I began writing Darren and Luke, a romance on a two-week cruise. I began sending bits of Bon Voyage to my friend J.D. Barkley via postcards, every stop we stopped at I picked up a postcard, some stamps and sent her bits of the story because we were completely cut off, no Wi-Fi, no Texts, no nothing so I couldn’t talk to her whilst I was doing it so I didn’t know her response to this story but I continued writing it anyway.

I had one check on my Facebook every few days (thanks to my dad’s phone) and could have at max an hours conversation or just upload a picture (that I did by mistake since I’d just cut my hair and not told anyone!).

But when I came home I had to get back to every other book I was currently writing and having to get ready for publishing, so I only really picked Darren and Luke backup a few months ago and all these feelings are coming back from that two-week cruise. We have booked one for this year (24th July) but writing Bon Voyage is not only making me want July to come quicker it’s also making me miss last years cruise far too much. It’s rare you can say they were the best two weeks but they were they were definitely the best two weeks in 2013 and I’d do anything to go back there.

Writing the right Sex Scene

I’m not some expert. I’ll say that now but having wrote quite a number of different characters sex scenes I think I can make some sense.

  1. Remember who your character is! If your character is a shy little thing they’d never have a highly detailed sex scene (especially from 1st person), that could be as simple as implying they’ve had sex or doing the lead up so the readers now that’s what’s going on. The same goes for the more boastful and loud characters they’d more likely have a detailed sex scene that they’d be proud of. Then of course there’s the characters in the middle, the ones who aren’t completely shy but aren’t loud and boastful, you can do a variety of things with these characters, you could write the lead up, get to the point of doing it but not quite writing them doing it and skip straight to the aftermath.
  2. Is your character a virgin? Something that people don’t really consider. It’s always one of the first that I do because sex scenes really are quite different for virgins and non-virgins. If you’re writing a loosing a virginity scene it could have more speech in it, more comforting, directions on what they’re doing. If you character has already lost their virginity and if they know what they’re doing there could be no need for speech at all, it could just flow with what they are doing and having no need for a word to be said between the two characters.
  3. How old is your character?  Also a rather important factor. Is your character above the age of consent in the country you are writing and if not is there a particular reason that they aren’t (is it relevant to the story that one of the characters are below the age of consent?), it also goes for older characters, characters who could’ve had more experience since they are older and are unlike to have teenage type sex, they could be with a committed partner who they’ve been with for years and their sex would be different to a pair of 16 year olds who are doing it for the first time.
  4. Are your characters in love? One most people wouldn’t think of. If you’re writing a sex scene (taking the virginity or just sex) you have to fit it to your character and the person they are doing it with. Two people in love would have a completely different experience with sex than two people who’ve met that night and were having a one night stand and how would the aftermath work? Would the person still be there when they wake up? Was the person spending the night anyway?
  5. What is the gender and sexuality of your characters? Is it a man and a woman? Two men? Two women?  Are you willing to do the research for these sex scenes? Knowing how different types of people have sex can make your sex scene about ten times better and a whole lot more believable and remember some people like to read the nitty-gritty stuff, the stuff you would possibly think you should leave out, if it’s true to that sexualities/genders sex why not put it in?
  6. Take it slow. I mean for you. Rushing a sex scene won’t do you many favours, take your time, do your research and make sure what you want to put across comes across. Not every sex scene is a hard-core erotica like 50 shades and that’s important to remember some can be soft and on a window seat with a snow setting. Remember to make it right for your character and right for you – you don’t want to be uncomfortable whilst writing.

Good Luck! and remember you learn as you do, your first sex scene you could go back a few years later and cringe at how inexperienced you were just don’t be disheartened and keep trying!

100 Pages!

So I’ve reached 100 pages on my most current novel Gay Brigade: Callum and Noah and I felt this overwhelming sense of pride and accomplishment although I’m not entirely sure why? I know I have 5 chapters left to complete, I know there’s still unfinished scenes that have been pre-wrote and yet I feel this overwhelming sense of accomplishment that I’ve reached that magic number, 100 (104 technically).

So I’m curious. Does anyone else get this overwhelming sense of accomplishment when they reach page 100? or is it only when they reach the end?

I’m quite the fan  of little connections within my stories and they’re always things that you probably wouldn’t notice otherwise.

My first and my most obvious is that I tend to send any of my characters aged 10 – 16 to the same school. Kingsbury High School, unless in special circumstances (Treble Clef – The Goldstein Academy, The Day Before – Shakespeare Academy for Boys, Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies – Astaire Academy). As Kingsbury is a mixed school it works for all my characters and every character that is the same age are in the same class.

Most of my 15/16 year old characters are in Mr Elliot’s class who made his first appearance in Choreography . Mr William Elliot attended University with Caleb Lewis, one of the main characters in Adventures in Twinville and has worked in Kingsbury from the age of 23 and has taught a vast majority of my characters, some of which you can see in Teaching Techniques.

My Second is any character over the age of 16 tend to attend college unless they stay at Kingsbury Sixth Form like Jake Yates (Barking at the Moon) and Alfie Necrosis (Death’s Apprentice). Most of my college characters are either on Acting, Theatre Technology or Photography (write what you know and all). If the characters are in Acting or Musical Theatre they are at some point taught by Jonathan Lawrence, who also attended University with Caleb Lewis. Jonathan appears in various books after his first appearance in Romeo and Julian, you can then see him appearing in Released and Taylor.

A third is through friendships. For example Jason Baker (Trapped and Released)  is best friends with Noah Logan (Sex Education, Released and Gay Brigade), Noah is also friends with Lottie Kelly (Sex Education).

Ryan Mitchell (Superstar and Gay Brigade) is best friends with Callum Jones (Gay Brigade) and Darren Jones (Gay Brigade and Bon Voyage) and of course Nathan Buffy (Spotlight) who is in the McKenzie Jackson Academy with him.

Michael Jacobs (Rapture) attends school with Luke Clark (Bon Voyage and Gay Brigade) as they are both American it is impossible for them to attend Kingsbury.

Patrick Whiteside (Stanley Street and Heart Rate) when hospitalised due to his HIV is in the same ward as Ralph Newton (Taylor and Heart Rate).

Jack Nicholas (Superstar, Spotlight and Moot) who begins dating Liam Matthews (Moot) is in the same Scout Group as Flynn Phillips (Encounter)

I find little connections make the books just that little more interesting and make people curious to learn more about that character or about their relationship. I obviously as you can tell have far too much fun with my connections but feel if I’m going to do them, they have to be done well.

My Dyslexic Brain

brainOkay the things I think about are sort of the same as every one else and I know there’s more in there that I’ve put on and it also isn’t where everything would actually be but my point is there.

I don’t think many people realise how hard it is for me to focus on one particular thing. This isn’t a oh poor me post, it’s a hopefully explain and have a bit more understanding post.

Allot of my train of thought is on my books. I manage to change everything that happens into my life into a story, into characters and a plot, sometimes it helps me understand the things that’s happened more if I put them into a book format or put them with my own characters.

I’ve also found, in College if my tutor says we’re doing research, I hate it, it doesn’t keep my attention and I get bored with it very quickly but if ever I need to do research for my stories I  am completely transfixed by what I’m researching and sometimes do so much that I forget to actually continue with my story.

I find it insanely difficult to recount most things I’ve learnt at school but I find it really easy to remember my timetables (lessons)  through from Year Seven to my current year at college. I can’t recite timetables (maths) but given a few minutes I can come with up with the answer (whether it’s correct is a different matter).

I have a lot of general knowledge, stupid little things like information about stuff that happened on the Set of Harry Potter or random knowledge about Doctor Who, a lot of the knowledge I have however will probably not  help me in life.

I could never go to University, my brain won’t let me, I’d find it far to difficult, sitting at a desk and listening to lectures I just wouldn’t be capable of it and I could never drop out of a course, I’d instantly regret it even if I hated what I was doing.

I find it difficult to remember very simple instructions but can remember song lyrics, stage directions, complete scripts, dances without hesitation.

Basically, my dyslexic brain is rather strange but it always gets me there, I know a few people who are dyslexic and know that all our brains function differently but this is how mine functions which I find reasonably intriguing.

I met One Direction Today…

Okay No I didn’t. I met a tribute band, but what I found interesting was the reaction from the 200 Brownies in the hall with me.

They were really talked up, the group of 7-10 year old girls truly believed the One Direction where going to be on that stage in that school hall, their hope was amazing and of course there was a air of disappointment when Harry, Liam, Louis, Zayn and Niall didn’t come on stage.

But it was a 45 minute show and at the end of those 45 minutes I could’ve sworn those girls had made themselves believe that those 5 boys on that stage were One Direction, the scream when they said autographs and pictures was very, very loud, the one child who was in tears because she wanted her arm signed, the hugs and the wanting to touch these 5 boys was as if the real 1D were there.

And it made me think. Yes there was a little disappointment there but these boys were reasonably cute (very cute!) and they could sing and that was all the 200 girls needed and they fell in love with them and it honestly amazed me.

I didn’t know what it was, I wouldn’t say it was hope but it was something that turned that group of girls who were all sat on the floor looking at the 5 boys who were supposed to be One Direction to the group of girls who were screaming and jumping and singing along with the 5 boys who were not One Direction but were the next best thing.
