Let’s Talk about Cucumber…

Cucumber-Channel4The new Channel 4, E4 and 4oD series written by the brilliant Russell T Davies. Of course when this began it was pitched as an LGBT show based in Manchester and of course I had my reservations, I feared RTD was trying to recreate Queer as Folk (RTD’s 1999 series) but after I’d watched the first episode it became clear that he wasn’t, this was just also based in Manchester.

We’re currently 6 episodes in and until last nights episode (26th February) it was a little flat, sure it was enjoyable there were some brilliant plots, some great lines and some great characters.

But last night, all kinds exploded. RTD knows when to throw in a wild plot twist (which I already knew from continuous 2005 – 2010 Doctor Who watching). Last nights episode shocked from the beginning giving the information that a central character was going to die, this made you instantly begin to anticipate what would happen, when would it happen, how it would happen, we then had a reasonably pleasant look at this characters life, seeing from his birth to the day we were at and by the time we’d gotten to that bit the information that he was going to die was gone, it’d just been forgotten.

Throughout the 6 episodes of the series we’ve seen many characters come and go, we’ve seen many characters develop and we’ve formed opinions on characters, whether we like them, whether we dislike them and there was a certain character I disliked from the off, I thought he was a bit of, to put it lightly, a prick tease and was reasonably wary of him, last night that wariness flew off the scale.

I found Episode 6 of Cucumber chilling and frightening and a harsh reality was flung from the screen right at me as I sat and I watched it. It was terrifying as, I am just about reaching my twenties, I never ever really experienced a truly homophobic nation but Cucumber made me realise, made me remember that unfortunately the nation is still reasonably homophobic and that is terrifying, that there are people living day after day hating others because of their sexual ordination and that ‘Gay Panic’ is still around – I first heard about that two years ago whilst putting on a production of the Laramie Project and even then I couldn’t believe it.

If you haven’t already I truly recommend Cucumber, Banana and Tofu. As each episode is a fantastic piece of television and writing whilst through brilliant actors performances, the stories and characters feel so real and so true that you cannot help but get drawn in.

Bravo RTD!

Character names have been left out this post to avoid spoilers.

Happy Pancake Tuesday!

An extract from Gay Brigade: Ryan and Daniel which will come out on the 29th April!

I heard the lock click and looked at Kenny who sat up slightly, he knew the lock meant that Daniel was home and after I’d told him he’d have to wait until Papa got home to make pancakes I saw him debating running to the door, that debate was going on whilst looking between the door of the living room and me, he just didn’t make his decision fast enough so decided to run at Daniel the moment he walked in.
“What have you told him?” Daniel asked making me smile as he came to me and kissed me.
“He was told in day-care that today is Pancake Day” I said and Daniel ahed, “I told him he’d have to wait for papa to make pancakes”
“Why?”
“Because” I said and he laughed
“What’s for tea?”
“Pancakes” I replied and he frowned “Savoury pancakes, pancakes and bacon” I said and he nodded slightly then looked at Kenny who was playing with his zip on his coat.
“Anything else?” He asked as we went into the kitchen
“Oh we can cut up a sausage and have a pancake sandwich” I said making him laugh as he stood Kenny on the seat and took his coat and bag off.
“I’m sure pancakes used to be sweet” Daniel said as he went into the fridge looking for the bacon and sausages
“Well you know be a bit adventurous once in a while” I replied making him smile as I got the flour out the cupboard then a mixing bowl and the sieve.
“DADDY” I heard behind me making me look at Kenny and laugh
“Do you want to help?” I asked and he nodded as Daniel came up behind him and put his apron on, then picked him up and carried him to me, sitting him on the counter top “Sit properly” I told him and watched him do so then gave him the sieve, making him hold it up and sprinkling the flour into it and smiling at him laughing at it as it went into the bowl I then helped him shake it then get the eggs and crack them deciding it was best I did it rather than Kenny.
“Do you want an egg in your pancake?” Daniel asked so I looked at him seeing he’d been cutting bacon and sausages and putting them into a pan
“No” I said in thought and watched him raise his eyebrow at me “I’ll go with no” I said making him laugh as I began stirring the mixture then let Kenny do it because the mixture wasn’t going to get thicker. “How are you planning on doing this?” I asked as he picked up the pan
“Cooking the contents before putting them in considering they’re raw meat” he said so I nodded as he took it to the stove and began cooking them as I turned back to Kenny who’d obviously gotten bored with stirring so I lifted him off the counter and took the mixture to the other side of the stove where the frying pan was whilst also keeping an eye on Kenny as he climbed onto the kitchen seat, he knew the rules that went with the oven.
“Are you going to flip it?” Daniel asked making me laugh as I used the spatula to turn the pancake over
“I’ll flip yours” I said making him smirk as I placed the first pancake on the plate and started the second, which I had to dance with Daniel to put on the plate since he had begun putting the contains in the first pancake, I then did the third and waited until it was done to flip it which had the biggest build up ever and considering it did a complete flip and landed back in the pan I got a cheer from Kenny which made me laugh whilst putting it on the last plate and putting the frying pan in the washing up bowl whilst Daniel folded the pancakes over then put them on the table.

Happy Valentines Day.

Extract from Prince’s Tale I which was released today (14/02/15)

I think I decided when I was rather young that the idea of Valentine’s Day wasn’t a good one, when I was young enough to not know better I used to believe I’d outlaw it once I am made King. Then I realised as it’s a National Holiday that’d be a bit hard. Ten years on, although I still am not hugely fond of Valentine’s Day I do not feel the need to outlaw it, I do however feel that the pressure, it puts upon such person in a relationship, is ludicrous and should be banned. I was stood beside Anthony, looking into one of the many pinkly decorated card shops, trying to work out just what my role in Valentine’s Day was this year.
“Is he getting you something?” Anthony asked so I raised one shoulder, “Do you want to get him something?” I raised the other shoulder, “YOU’RE not helpful!” He stated so I looked at him,
“Anthony, I cannot buy a card that says I suppose boyfriend because I cannot be seen buying it, I also cannot be seen to have it in my possession, I cannot send him flowers and chocolates via the royal service as he cannot find out that I am well royal, so I am ruddy well stuck”
“Ruddy well stuck?” he repeated fully, fully amused by the statement so I threw a very tiny strop which just made him more amused, “Aren’t we good and proper!” he mocked so I pushed him making him laugh,
“Are you buying Annabelle a card?” I asked and got rolled eyes in return.
“Now Matthew is that rebuke not old now?”
“Now Anthony did you not sleep together on New Year’s?” I replied and he pointed at me, his mouth open but no words coming out,
“HA- ha.”
“How on earth?” he queried whilst lowering his finger,
“Jordan,” I said nodding, “Keeps me well informed, I do the same.”
“Well isn’t that good of Jordan” he replied lovely and sarcastically so I grabbed his arm and began shaking him,
“What do I do?” I asked making him growl at me from the back of his throat,
“No card,” he said so I nodded, “Maybe something to show you care so what? Chocolates?” he said then shrugged again “AT least then you can share the chocolates, smiles all round, wet naked sexy time” He said then clapped at me making me jump then begin shaking my head,
“NO wet naked sexy time,” I said hearing his oxymoron of a laugh, it was amused yet exhausted,
“Let’s go eat then we’ll buy your chocolate but NOW let’s go eat,” He said then took hold of my shoulders and began to lead me towards a fast food outlet.

The thing with my stories is,

Although the book has finished the character hasn’t.

You could read a book that feels like it isn’t connected to any other book I’ve wrote (Treble Clef, Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies, The Day Before,) which does have a ending, something satisfying, sometimes really not, but the characters are still there – they don’t stop they continue – I could if asked tell you the past, the present and the future of all my characters.

So keep an eye out – you don’t know who could pop up when you’re another one of my books!
