Gay Brigade: Get Tested

Picture1 For World Aids Day (December 1st) I will be publishing The Gay Brigade: Get Tested. In this 20 page story Ryan, Darren and Callum all go and get tested for HIV after Darren had a scare. The three boys all recount their sexual partners and try and figure out what they’d do if their tests come back positive. At age 19 being positive is a scary prospect but as they look more into it, they learn things they didn’t know and grow more aware of what being HIV positive actually means!

The Story of Paperhouse!

paperhouse 2 So Paperhouse was published today 19th September (after a month-long wait!). But there’s far more too Paperhouse than meets the eye.

Paperhouse’s story began with Superstar, weird I know but that’s where it began on the 23rd July 2012! It started with Mr Ryan Mitchell who on the 23rd July was just a tender 16 year old, he was a brand new character, he was just two names I’d put together then decided that Superstar was from his point of view.

A year later Gay Brigade began to be formed which was essentially the prequel to Superstar, the story of how Ryan got to the competition. Whilst Gay Brigade was in process I began thinking about Ryan’s dad’s story because he’s only ever had his mum(my strongest female character Catherine Mitchell).

It’d always been apparent to me what’d happened to Ryan’s dad but I didn’t want to just narrow it down and put it into a monologue from Ryan because that so wouldn’t be right. So instead, after talking it over with the number 2 who reads everything Paperhouse started to be formed. Paperhouse shows the story of the year Catherine was pregnant with Ryan, it shows how her friendship with Pete started, it shows Michael’s relationship with Pete and also shows Michael’s relationship with Catherine.

Unintended Series

So yesterday I posted a blog about writing in a Family Tree, well today I realised I’ve been also writing in Timelines. Slide2

This is Ryan Mitchell’s timeline (the guy from the Family Tree yesterday) Now okay so there is a series in here, the Gay Brigade series but these books also cover a wide scope of his life. His timeline actually begins at his birth with Paperhouse which is the story of his father (which is essentially a prequel to every book with Ryan in – but also a standalone), Ryan then reappears in Gay Brigade aged 15/16 and in his last year of secondary school where him and his two best friends Darren Jones (who also is mentioned  in Paperhouse) and Callum Jones (also Paperhouse) are getting prepared for the future. Ryan is then in Superstar, based in 2012, where he meets and begins dating his future husband Daniel Bussel, following that is Gay Brigade: Callum and Noah where Ryan and Daniel adopt their son McKenzie Callum Mitchell-Bussel, Gay Brigade: Ryan and Daniel then documents a year of their life as a family, followed by Gay Brigade: Darren and Luke where Ryan plays his defining role in his career, Mickey in Blood Brothers.

Slide1

It was because of this character Jake Logan that I decided to do these timelines. I realised he’d been appearing in others books before his own. He appears from ages 4 – 13 as just Noah’s brother, but although he is a minor character in Sex Education and Released he’s still important. For example in Sex Education four year old Jake Logan won’t speak a word but only will to Noah, he whispers everything to his twin brother Adam, it is then later discovered in Gay Brigade: Callum and Noah that Jake only really speaks to Noah and is otherwise quiet also in Gay Brigade: Callum and Noah, Jake comes to conclusion that he is asexual and the fact that he has mild anxiety is also revealed in that book. Later in The Asexual Equation he’s undergoing an experiment to define asexuality for his friend who is a biologist whilst also suffering from quite severe anxiety.

Slide3

Lastly is Mr William Elliot who I had to do the timeline of because he just constantly reappears in books. Our first encounter (going by book years not publishing years) is in 1999 in Adventures in Twinville V.1-V.5 on his first day of University where he is enrolled onto a course to become a Secondary School teacher, we then re-encounter him in 2002 in Jonathan on the year of his graduation. He reappears in AiT V.6-V.10 where he marries his boyfriend (who he met in University). William then just appears as a teacher throughout, appearing in Choreography, Gay Brigade, Casey and The Asexual Equation varying from just being a teacher to being the LGBT coordinator, which he is appointed in Teaching Techniques after teaching a Gay Sex Ed class.

Writing a Blogger (Vlogger)

So I’ve started the almighty challenge of writing a Vlogger, well two vloggers.

I got the idea after watched a outrageous amount of Lushlaw videos on YouTube and an intriguing thought struck me, the charm of Lushlaw is that they’re a couple and they let it be known that they are very happy together and kiss occasionally on camera.

My idea began to form because I thought about the power of deceiving. My characters Calvin and Damian (YouTube name CDPlayer) are boyfriends but only on YouTube, outside of YouTube they are nothing more than 7 year friends who are both gay – that bit isn’t a lie.

I’ve been playing with this idea for a few days and have a good surface for it and find the challenge of writing it thrilling. But to make sure I do the right amount of research and write this completely right, I have also started a vlog which’ll kick off tomorrow on ASeeley – and that I am a mixture of terrified and excited about.

Things I’m Passionate about Number Nine! (In no particular order)

LGBT Stuff.

So it’s quite clear I’m a keen supporter of LGBT rights and pretty much everything to do with LGBT.

It only really became a big thing to me when I was around 15/16 and it was only because I began to find out about it then and all my books are based around LGBT in some way (And yes that does cover Gay, Bisexual, Transsexual and Asexual). I am hugely passionate about the LGBT community due to a variety of reasons and am a huge supporter of Equal Rights.

When I was 13 my auntie got a civil partnership with her partner and I remember not hugely understanding what was happening until everyone began calling it a wedding and I understood, I then began querying about civil partnerships and marriage rights and so it began.

Last year when we went to Sweden and the Abba Museum we found it was in partnership with Stockholm Pride and of course had to go around the little store that they’d set up (and buy a bag).

I also around May Last Year filmed a video for Wipe out Homophobia (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xGGBS68Eudw) and I feel it went really, really well.

Of course it was difficult being so highly involved with LGBT when I was trying to figure out my own sexuality and people presume which doesn’t make it easier. But now that I have (which will be involved in a later post) I can happily express my support for LGBT whilst also being sure in myself and my letter in the LGBT.
